SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
BETWEEN MITOSIS AND MEIOSIS
Similarities
Differences
- Each is a method that produces new cells
- Each is a method by which genetic material is duplicated and initially split into two daughter cells
- Each shares the basis phases of interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase
- Each consists of multiple stages
Differences
- Mitosis occurs in many different parts of the body
- Meiosis only occurs in certain parts of the body usually involved in reproduction
- Mitosis has only one complete cycle of division
- Meiosis has two cycles of division
- Mitosis creates diploid cells
- Meiosis creates haploid cells
- Mitosis creates two daughter cells
- Meiosis creates 4 daughter cells
- Mitosis creates identical copies of the original cell
- Meiosis creates cells with different combinations of the DNA of the original cell
